What is Energy Medicine?
CAM Therapy

Energy Medicine falls into the category of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) and can be very beneficial in assisting a person with physical illness, as well as emotional and mental disorders (Energy Medicine: What is it and how does it work?, 2022). Additionally, CAM therapy has shown beneficial in promoting high-level wellness and peak performance. Energy medicine addresses balancing the body’s energy flow in order to help one heal and maintain health and wellness. This is accomplished through a variety of techniques from healing traditions around the world. Each function on balancing with the body’s meridians, the chakras, or both.

Introduction to the Meridians

The meridians are the channels or tracks that carry energy from one point to another in the body. This energy is also known as Chi/Qi/Prana/Chetana. As we go through life these energy channels can become blocked or clogged by our experiences, stress, injury, trauma, bad habits like addictions, poor diet, lack of exercise, and poor hydration. These blockages can be traced to the root of all health issues including physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual illnesses (Natural Health Zone: Guide to Holistic Healing, 2025).

How this energy is able to flow affects many aspects of our life, how we think, how we feel, and our overall health condition. Imbalance leads to Dis-Ease. If we notice this imbalance early on, we can reverse it. If we ignore it soon becomes Disease.

There are 14 Main Body Meridians, 12 Paired, and 2 Single Meridians. The Meridian Pairs complement one another with one Yin (Flowing up) and the other Yang (Flowing down).

12 primary paired meridians:

6 yang and 6 yin – yin and yang forming a pair.

↓ Stomach meridian (yang) flows to the ↑ Spleen meridian (yin)
↑ Heart meridian (yin) flows to the ↓ Small Intestine meridian (yang)
↓ Bladder meridian (yang) flows to the ↑ Kidney meridian (yin) ↑ Pericardium meridian (yin) flows to ↓ Triple Warmer meridian (yang) ↓ Gallbladder meridian (yang) flows to the ↑ Liver meridian (yin) ↑ Lung meridian (yin) flows to the ↓ Large Intestine meridian (yang)

And 2 single mid- meridians:

Governing Vessel – flows to the Conception Vessel

Additionally, there are five meridian elements: Earth, Metal, Fire, Wood, and Water.

  • Fire: Heart and small intestine meridian, circulation and three-fold warming meridian.

  • Earth: Stomach and spleen meridian.

  • Metal: Lung and colon meridian.

  • Water: Kidney and bladder meridian.

  • Wood: Liver and gallbladder meridian.

Therapies for Meridians

1. Acupuncture

  • Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific points along the meridians to unblock Qi and restore balance. It is widely used for pain management, stress relief, and chronic health conditions.

2. Acupressure

  • Acupressure uses finger pressure to stimulate the same points targeted in acupuncture. This technique is non-invasive and can be practiced at home for self-care.

3. Moxibustion

  • Moxibustion involves burning a herb called Mugwort near specific points to warm the meridians and promote energy flow. It is particularly beneficial for cold-related conditions or chronic pain.

4. Cupping

  • Cupping therapy uses suction cups to stimulate blood flow and Qi along the meridians. It’s commonly used for muscle tension and detoxification.

5. Herbal Medicine

  • Herbal remedies complement meridian therapy by supporting the body’s internal balance and addressing specific health concerns.

Introduction to the Chakras

In my 20 years of practicing Energy Medicine, I have learned several ideas on our chakra system. When I began, we learned about the 7 major chakras and over 2000 minor ones including each organ having its own 7 chakras. Over time this system has grown to identify 12 main chakras. However, the newer 12 chakra system comes from the energy workers and contemporary healers and their perspectives on the human energy system (Chakras.info, 2019).

There are two schools of thought on where these additional 5 chakras are located, one school of thought locates them outside the human body having one below the root chakra, then the 7 going up the spine, and the remaining ones above the crown chakra. The second school of thought includes all 12 inside the human body by positioning the added 5 chakras in between the commonly known chakras.

There are numerous variations in the configuration of the 12 chakras with a common reference to 2 above the crown and one below the root (Chakras.info, 2019). Personally, I feel like the one chakra below the root known as the Earth chakra and the 4 above the crown make the most sense as they would also represent the layers of the aura as described by Barbara Brennan in her book “Hands of Light: A Guide to Healing Through the Human Energy Field” (1988). Additionally, these additional chakras help us understand our connection to the entire universe. The 12-chakra system runs on the premise that all living beings are a part of the whole. Grounded and linked to the Earth as well as being linked to the universe through a thin cable effectively reaching both miles into space and roughly three feet into the Earth (Chakras.info, 2019).

Cyndi Dale, an energy worker and author of many books on the energy system, discusses how the 12-chakra system allows us to use a wider range of energy for healing. Giving us the ability to get in touch with the whole array of dimensions of our human experience by allowing us to draw from powerful energies that reside outside of the human body (Dale, 2016). This new system of 12-chakras may have only recently been brought into the mainstream of energy workers knowledge, but many shamanic traditions have discussed these power centers for millennia in their healing practices (Chakras.info, 2019).

The 7 Original Chakras

  1. The root chakra

  2. The Sacral chakra

  3. The solar plexus chakra

  4. The Heart chakra

  5. The throat chakra

  6. The third eye/brow chakra

  7. The crown chakra

I also learned about the high heart chakra in my Healing Touch Classes. We will review each of the 12 chakras further.

Grounding

"Grounding connects you to Earth's energy, providing stability in your physical and emotional state. Spend time in nature, walk barefoot, or visualize roots growing from your feet into the earth. Feel the calm and centeredness this practice brings. 🌳"
